Obama to Consider a ‘Prepack’ Auto Bankruptcy

President-Elect Barack Obama‘s transition team is exploring a swift, prepackaged bankruptcy for automakers as a possible solution to the industry’s financial crisis, according to a person familiar with the matter.

Obama's team is in contact with bankruptcy lawyers while U.S. lawmakers delayed until December a vote on whether to give General Motors Corp., Ford Motor Co. and Chrysler LLC a $25 billion bailout. In a prepackaged bankruptcy, an automaker would go into court with financing, including government financing, in hand after reaching agreement with lenders, workers and suppliers on what each would give up and on the business plan to be followed.

Catholic bishops will fight Obama on abortion

[myway.com] The nation's Roman Catholic bishops vowed to forcefully confront the Obama administration over its support for abortion rights, saying the church and religious freedom could be under attack in the new presidential administration.

Several bishops said they would accept no compromise on abortion policy. Many condemned Catholics who had argued it was morally acceptable to back President-elect Obama because he pledged to reduce abortion rates.
